Leadership development is one of the biggest challenges faced by organizations today as talent retires with a dwindling reservoir of qualified replacements on the horizon. Join Central Florida Chapter’s own Dr. Terry K Czigan  for this breakfast session, as she presents a coaching program that was specifically designed and researched for middle managers. The program combined content coaching from the best leadership gurus in the industry, temperament study, multi-rater feedback, and Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award leadership competencies undefined with results yielding a 17% to 60% increase in the use of the coached leadership competencies, illustrating coaching as an important tool for succession planning.

Coaching provided a flexible means of tailoring leadership development content to the temperament type of each client. Participating middle managers immediately practiced the competencies in a real-time setting and were able to develop leadership styles unique to each of them. These were – and in your organization, can be – the managers being groomed to move up to the executive level. This coaching program enabled them to hit the ground running! As your organization plans for the future, coaching can be an important tool for personnel retention, employee satisfaction, and succession planning – from the middle up!

During the hands-on portion of the session, you will have the opportunity to take and score a short form of the temperament instrument used in the coaching program and then use those insights gained into your own temperament to recognize the connections between coaching, leadership development, and temperament. In small group discussions, you will then consider and discuss the applicability and transferability of this type of coaching intervention into your own work and organization and brainstorm how coaching and temperament can be combined to groom your middle managers to move up.

The foundation for this dissertation study was a process whereby middle managers would acquire self-knowledge first, move outward to learning related to competencies, then combine those two steps into practiceundefineda process the researcher called the concentric-flow leadership development coaching process. The results of this benchmarking study concluded this is an effective coaching process recommended to improve leadership practices of middle managers. The action research process also provided a useful method for the design of a qualitative study that could be considered by other organizations. This is a promising beginning, but further research is necessary to determine the most effective use of these processes.

Dr. Czigan has also been selected to present this seminar at the upcoming national Performance Improvement Conference “Scaling New Heights, Delivering Results” of the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) on April 11, 2011, at the Walt Disney World Swan Hotel, under the convention’s category of “Research to Practice.” In addition to presenting for Central Florida ASTD, Dr. TC will also be presenting to the Suncoast Chapter of ASTD on March 17 and to the Tampa Bay Chapter of ISPI on April 19.
