We can tell stories. We can facilitate learning. But how do we use stories to facilitate learning? This session is designed to fill that void. We'll start from the beginning – mining your own life and experiences for relevant stories to tell, regardless of the topic you're teaching. Then we'll discuss how to pull from other disciplines, like literature, film, and writing, to help you select, structure and shape stories that can facilitate connections between you, your learners, and the material. You'll also learn about the characteristics of stories that are most useful for facilitating learning. Finally, we'll address how you can help learners find and shape their own stories. You'll leave this session with templates and strategies that will help you apply what you've learned about finding and shaping back on the job.

You will walk away knowing how to:

  • Describe the benefits of facilitating with story.
  • List strategies for mining your own life and experiences for relevant stories.
  • Explain how to structure stories so that the intent is clear, the listeners are captivated, and the connection to the content is evident.
